The Director-General of the Ghana Standards Authority (GSA), Professor George Agyei, together with some senior officials of the Authority, on Thursday, May 7, 2026, met with the leadership of the Commission for Technical and Vocational Education Training (CTVET) at the Head Office in Accra.

The meeting was convened following a request by the Authority to the Commission to support the establishment of a National Metrology Training Curriculum.

The delegation, led by Mr. Kwame Zu, the Deputy Director-General in charge of Technical Services, noted that the request by the Authority aligns strongly with the mandate of the Commission.

He added that the Commission welcomes such collaborations with institutions like GSA to help provide competency-based training for learners within Ghana’s industrial sector.

Prof. Agyei, in his remarks, stated that the idea of establishing metrology training in Ghana has been under consideration for the past 10 to 15 years. He further said that he considers the Commission a dynamic institution dedicated to the training of middle and higher-level education, adding that his admiration for the institution stems from his understanding of their systems and operations.

“This idea of getting our metrology training in Ghana has been on the drawing board for the past 10 years. I know CTVET is a very dynamic institution focused on training mid-level and higher-level training,” he stated.

The Director-General stated that Ghana currently lacks an institution dedicated to training in metrology, stressing that the field plays a critical role in trade and industry. According to him, metrology, which is the science of measurement, is essential in ensuring credibility and acceptance in international trade.

“If you don’t get metrology right, nobody will respect you in trade; we are the science of trust,” he noted.

Mr. Evans Asiedu, Director of Metrology at the GSA, said Section 59 of the Ghana Standards Authority Act, 2022 (ACT 1078) describes the Authority as the National Metrology Institute, in accordance with the requirements of the International Bureau of Weights and Measures.

A technical committee was subsequently constituted to steer the initiative, with Dr. Awal Mohammed, Deputy Director-General in charge of Operations at the GSA, serving as chair alongside Mr. Evans Asiedu, Director of Metrology.

Representing the Commission on the committee are Mr. Kwame Zu; Dr. Peter Boahin, the CTVET Director in charge of Standards Curriculum Development and Enforcement; Mr. Emmanuel Taywan, Deputy Director in charge of Curriculum at the CVET; Mr. Theophilus Zogblah, Deputy Director; and Mrs. Edith Adotey, Principal Manager, all from CTVET

Present at the meeting were Dr. Awal Mohammed, DDG-OPS; Mr. Samuel Abdulai Jabanyite,

The post Director-General Meets CTVET Officials on National Metrology Training Curriculum first appeared on Ghana Standards Authority.

The Ghana Standards Authority (GSA), through the Fish Inspection Department, hosted an Annual General Meeting for land-based fish processing establishments at its Head office on Tuesday, April 28, 2026.

The meeting, which assembled industry stakeholders and GSA officials, was convened to address evolving international requirements, and focused on the European Union’s implementation measures under its regulation (EU) 2019/2129, establishing rules for the uniform application of frequency rates for identity and physical checks on certain consignments of animals and goods entering the Union.

It provided a platform to clarify recent updates from the European Union, review Ghana’s performance at EU Border Control Posts (BCPs), examine implications on approved establishments and exporters, and identify collective actionable solutions. The forum sought to strengthen collaboration between the Competent Authority (CA), the Fish Inspection Department, and industry stakeholders.

Mr. Eshun encouraged participants to engage actively and raise critical questions, expressing optimism that all challenges could be overcome through collective effort.

Mrs. Genevieve Baah-Mante, Director of the Inspectorate Directorate, congratulated Ghana’s fish industry for its hard work. She stressed that the Department’s responsibilities extend beyond routine checks to supporting approved establishments in consistently meeting regulatory and international requirements, particularly those of the EU.

The Head of the Fish Inspection Department, Mrs. Gloria Osei, in delivering her remarks, stated that: “As we deliberate today, our goal is to ensure that Ghana maintains and improves its compliance status, reduces adverse inspection burdens, and sustains its position as a reliable exporter of safe fishery products to the European Union.”

On the issue of capacity building, she introduced new inspectors to the department and explained that they were undergoing structured training and mentorship as per the requirements of ISO/IEC 17020 which the department is accredited to. Mrs. Osei, later updated stakeholders and management on the review of fish inspection activities from 2025 to date.

Mrs. Hannah Akoto Essel of the Fish Inspection Department held an interactive session on the regulation (EU) 2019/2129. She explained the regulatory requirements covering consignments and their implications for the approved export companies and the country.

The meeting concluded with a detailed and insightful question-and-answer session, during which the various Interested Parties within GSA were present and available to respond directly to questions addressed to them, allowing participants to seek clarity on compliance issues and regulatory expectations.

Speaking at the event, Mr. Clement Kwolaga Kubati, Greater Accra Regional Manager of the GSA, emphasized that the Authority’s mandate goes beyond enforcement to include public awareness.

He explained that GSA is committed to creating awareness among businesses and consumers on the importance of standards and quality assurance in trade. According to him, vendors and entrepreneurs who seek to grow and expand their businesses stand to benefit greatly from collaborating with the Authority.

“If you are a vendor here and you want to expand your business, it is good to partner with Ghana Standards Authority. We are here to protect consumers; we are here to promote trade,” he stated.

Mrs. Dorothy Amoah, Head of the Marketing Department, educated the entrepreneurs, particularly food vendors, to engage the services of GSA by purchasing relevant standards and submitting their products for testing.

She further explained the importance of the GSA Certification Mark, noting that products which successfully undergo testing and meet the required standards are granted the GSA Certification Mark to be embossed on their products.

She added that the Mark serves as an assurance of quality and conformity to standards, thereby increasing consumer confidence and enabling businesses to market their products both locally and internationally.

As part of the exercise, the GSA Enforcement Team visited various exhibition stands to inspect products and educate vendors on proper labelling requirements and compliance with standards.

The team also assessed whether products on display had been certified by the GSA and collected samples of suspected sub-standard products for further laboratory testing and analysis.

The post Greater Accra Regional Office Educates Vendors at Electrofest Fair first appeared on Ghana Standards Authority.
