The meeting is a follow-up to the investigation that both institutions were involved in, on the growing use of minivans (Toyota Voxy) as public transport, particularly, after being converted from right-hand drive to left-hand drive.

During the meeting, Mr. Amaliba highlighted the myriad of benefits the collaboration between both institutions could do for the country and noted that the time was ripe and that his doors were always open for discussions to move the collaboration forward.

“Thank you for the warm reception and I am optimistic that this meeting will set a tone for us to work together to bring about change. My doors are always open, and I am looking forward to further discussions in the area of road safety,” he noted.

Prof. Agyei expressed the Authority’s appreciation to the NRSA for calling on GSA to help investigate the Toyota Voxy issue which he said is a testament that if government agencies worked together, they could bring positive changes to the country.

He added this was the right time to act and protect lives of road users in the country and assured his counterpart that the collaboration would yield greater results.

Mr. Macmillan Prentice, GSA’s Auto Team Lead, who was also present at the meeting, explained certain works the Authority and his team were involved with, especially in the vehicle sector and expressed his optimism that the meeting would further strengthen the work the Authority had done so far in that sector and inure to the benefit of the country as a whole.

Both DGs agreed to collaborate very closely, especially in the implementation of the standard: GS 4510 – Requirements for Imported Used Vehicles; enforcement of the recently developed standards for motor vehicle crash helmets in preparation for the legalization of ‘Okada’; certification and registration of facilities involved in vehicle maintenance, repair, modification and conversion, among others.

A delegation from the African Development Bank (AfDB), on Wednesday April 15, 2026, paid a courtesy call to the Director-General of the Ghana Standards Authority (GSA), Prof. George Agyei and some senior officials of the Authority at the head office in Accra.

The visit discussed independent evaluation of AfDB’s support to Private Sector Engagement (PSE) in agriculture and how the GSA has evolved in relation to agricultural standards and certification over the period.

The team, led by Mr. Andson Nsune of the Independent Development Evaluation (IDEV), explained that the visit was aimed at gathering findings and key lessons to help shape the implementation of the Bank’s new 10-year strategy focused on promoting private sector growth within the agricultural sector.

Prof. Agyei noted that the AfDB remains one of Ghana’s key partners, playing a vital role in the country’s development efforts. He added that based on GSA’s mandate, the Authority is closely aligned to every sector of the economy, including agriculture.

“In Ghana, our agricultural export is increasing steadily, and the government is pushing accelerated export development policy to boost the agricultural sector, and without standards, we cannot go anywhere. Standard is the language of trade, so once we are developing agriculture, if we don’t link it to standards, we will be stuck,” he stated.

He further stressed that standards must not be an afterthought in the planning process for the Bank’s 10-year strategy, emphasizing that as systems are being designed to support the agricultural sector, standards should be integrated from the beginning and embedded at every stage.

Hon. Samuel Abdulai Jabanyite, the Deputy Director-General in charge of general Services (DDG-GEN), added that Ghana, over the past 10 years, has maintained a good relationship with the AfDB and this has made agriculture a key priority area in the diversification of the economy.

He said that GSA is playing a critical role in the realization of government’s bid to revolutionize agriculture.

The Head of International Relations at the GSA, Mr. George Anti, and Mr. Kofi Yeboah Debrah, Acting Head of Public Relations, were also present during the discussion, where they shared insights on the critical role the GSA plays in setting and promoting standards within the agricultural sector.

The AfDB is undertaking evaluations of the Bank’s support to PSE in agriculture and Gender Equality and Women’s Empowerment (GEWE) in Ghana.

The Ghana Standards Authority (GSA) on Tuesday, April 14, 2026, met with members of the Greater Accra Branch of the Association of Ghana Industries (AGI) to discuss the role of standards in promoting trade.

The meeting, held at the head office of the Authority, was aimed at educating the business owners on how standards, metrology and conformity assessment could help them comply, compete and expand into new markets.

The Director-General (DG) of the GSA, Professor George Agyei, in his remarks, expressed the Authority’s excitement in having all businesses under one roof to discuss how they could both collaborate to improve their businesses.

He stated that the most powerful weapon for businesses is standards, and when they complied with standards, their businesses would go far and remain competitive.

“The single most powerful, under-utilized competitive weapon available to every Ghanaian business is standards. Standards are the language of trade and without them you can be exposed in the markets,” he noted.

He further tasked them to work closely with the GSA to help them understand and standardize their products and activities to reap the full benefits.

Prof. Agyei, however, sounded a word of caution about high-risk goods and other sub-standard products that are illegally imported into the country. He told the gathering that GSA would not be lenient on people who bring in sub-standard high risks goods because such goods affect consumers and could cause problems for the country, adding that such businesses would be sanctioned according to the law.

The chairman of the Greater Accra AGI Branch, Mr. Tsonam Akpeloo, was grateful to the GSA for the opportunity to host the forum to discuss the benefits of standardization to businesses and trade in general.

He noted that the association stood ready to support GSA to carry out its mandate.

“Today’s meeting is very critical especially in our area of business. Standards are very important, because, without it, we can’t trade. We are willing to work with the GSA to help ensure that goods manufactured and imported into the country meet the standards,” he said.

He added that industry loves to collaborate with government and are not against government policies but rather want government to engage them extensively before introducing new policies.

He appealed to the government to consider the interests of industry before implementing certain ideas or policies.

Officials from GSA took the AGI members through the various activities of the Authority and how these activities could help them in their line of work.

Mr. Kojo Eshun, the Deputy Director-General in charge of Conformity Assessment (DDG-CAS) and Hon. Samuel Jabanyite, the Deputy Director-General (General Services), in their remarks, also noted that the GSA existed to help them grow and assured them of their support.

“You’re the cornerstone and very vital to the economy of Ghana and we’ll give you the needed support to grow,” they noted.

Dr. Awal Mohammed, the Deputy Director-General (Operations), expressed his full confidence that the discussions would yield great benefits to the businesses and encouraged them to draw closer to the GSA to help them resolve their issues to promote their business.

Various questions were posed to the GSA with the Authority ultimately pledging to work closely with them to ensure that they meet the standards and improve their businesses.

Members of the AGI Greater Accra Branch who attended the discussion included representatives from the textiles industry, food and beverage sector, farmers, cosmetic companies, electrical cables companies, among others.

The post GSA Engages AGI-Greater Accra Members on Importance of Standardisation in Trade first appeared on Ghana Standards Authority.

Staff of the Ghana Standards Authority (GSA), on Tuesday, March 31 and Thursday, April 2, 2026, engaged the public during a market outreach programme held at the Tema Community 1 and Makola Markets, respectively.

The exercise was aimed at educating traders and consumers on the importance of weighing scales in trade, promoting the patronage of locally manufactured goods bearing the made-in-Ghana logo and how to identify GSA-certified products.

The team, led by senior members of the Metrology Directorate, engaged the traders on how the use of weighing scales ensures price precision between sellers and buyers.

The GSA crew calibrated some of the weighing scales, and those that passed were embossed with green stickers indicating that the weighing scales were accurate.

The staff displayed placards and shared brochures highlighting the importance of using an accurate weighing scale and how the use of weighing scale in trade ensures price precision at the marketplace, prevents losses, ensures regulatory compliance and ensures fair trade between traders and consumers.

Some of the traders expressed their resolve to use weighing scales to sell but called on the GSA to continue its sensitization drive and help them acquire scales to sustain its educational efforts.

The management of Media General, a leading media company in Ghana, on Wednesday, April 1, 2026, paid a courtesy call on the Director-General of the GSA, Prof. George Agyei, at the head office of the Authority in Accra.

The courtesy call was to discuss potential collaborations with the Authority in public education campaigns on standards compliance and to explore how Media General’s television, radio and digital platforms could support the GSA’s communication objectives and enhance public visibility.

The delegation, which was led by its General Manager – Commercial, Mr. Daniel Amartey-Amarh, said the visit was aimed at engaging the leadership of GSA in order to gain insight into its planned activities for the year, and to explore opportunities of partnership and collaboration.

He further reiterated that a number of initiatives are being considered, including a thought leadership event on Onua TV and TV3. He explained that these engagements would assemble key stakeholders and consumers on live television and this would give the GSA the platform to educate the public on standards and the importance of maintaining them across sectors.

He added that all ongoing efforts about public campaigns should be sustained to run for about a year to ensure a lasting impact.

Prof. Agyei, in his remarks, stated that GSA takes its relationship with the media seriously and is very excited about this potential partnership.

“GSA is a media friendly institution because we work in the interest of the Ghanaian public. GSA stands as a main bridge between Ghana and the rest of the world, helping our manufacturers to move forward and in achieving this, we need the corporation of the media to send our message across,” he noted.

He highlighted that this year the Authority is intensifying its market surveillance efforts, adding that it has gone a step further by establishing the Greater Accra Regional Office, which will oversee the Trading Standards Inspectors (TSIs) in Accra. He also announced the introduction of a new initiative called the Market Integrity Agents, who would be deployed directly in our market space to identify and get rid of substandard products.

The post Media General Delegation Visits GSA first appeared on Ghana Standards Authority.

On Thursday, March 19, 2026, the Ghana Standards Authority (GSA), in collaboration with the Police SWAT team, embarked on an enforcement exercise in Adabraka, closing down several shops for selling substandard paint products.

The exercise, led by the Greater Accra Regional Office, follows weeks of sample collection from the affected shops for laboratory testing. The laboratory analysis of the samples revealed that the paints contained high levels of lead, exceeding the permissible limit of 0.0009 under GS Specification 181:2019. The exposure to such high lead levels can cause serious health risks such as cancer and kidney problems.

Speaking to the media after the exercise, Mr. Clement Kwolaga Kubati, the Greater Accra Regional Manager, stated that, his outfit will undertake a series of similar exercise to eliminate substandard products like cables and other household materials from the market.

“What you have witnessed today is a testament of what GSA can do. It is not going to be a one-off thing. There is going to be series of this exercise. From paint, we will move to electricals and any other product we have intelligence on.

“We are pleading with Ghanaians to assist us to rid the market of substandard products,” he stated.

The enforcement team affixed GSA stickers bearing the inscription “Under Temporary Closure by GSA” to the affected shops, serving as a clear warning to consumers.

The post GSA Intensifies Enforcement, Shuts down Shops Selling Substandard Paints in Adabraka first appeared on Ghana Standards Authority.

The Ghana Standards Authority (GSA), in partnership with the Physikalisch-Technische Bundesanstalt (PTB), Germany’s National Metrology Institute, has hosted a steering committee meeting to discuss the second phase of the ‘Establishment of a Fit-for-Future’ National Metrology Institute (NMI) project, an initiative designed to modernise Ghana’s metrology system and align it with global best practices.

The meeting, held at Standards Heights on Thursday, March 19, 2026, brought together key stakeholders, including representatives from GSA’s Metrology Directorate, educational and health sectors, the National Procurement Authority, Ministry of Trade, Agribusiness and Industry (MoTAI) and international collaborators.

Discussions centred on enhancing productivity, competitiveness, and export potential across sectors such as health, construction, and agriculture, all of which are experiencing growing demand for metrological services.

The Director-General of the GSA, Prof. George Agyei, expressed gratitude to Germany for the support and gave special recognition to reps of the PTB, one of the world’s leading metrology institutions, who travelled to Ghana to join in the discussions.

He stressed that strong metrology capabilities are essential to Ghana’s industrial competitiveness, export readiness, consumer safety, and the broader pursuit of a productive 24‑hour economy championed under President John Mahama.

The Director-General said metrology serves as the backbone of quality and productivity across all sectors. Beyond providing equipment and technical expertise, the GSA-PTB partnership has fostered sustainable capacity-building, strengthened systems, and enhanced the competence of Ghanaian professionals.

Prof. Agyei noted that collaboration with the PTB has enabled remarkable gains in the development of Ghana’s quality ecosystem. He reaffirmed GSA’s commitment to the successful implementation of the project.

Frederike Kasper, the Project Coordinator from the PTB, lauded the long-standing partnership between her outfit and the GSA, calling it a model for effective quality infrastructure development.

The collaboration, she said, forms part of the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development’s (BMZ) support for the project which aims to strengthen GSA’s capacities and establish a self-sustaining NMI that is internationally recognised.

Also in attendance at the meeting were Mr. Noah Tumfo, Chief Director of MoTAI, Mr. Samuel Sackitey, the Director of Finance at the GSA, Mr. Evans Asiedu, the Acting Director of Metrology, Mercy Asantewaa Gyakye Wiredu, head of Industrial Metrology Department, Frank Okai, head of the Legal Metrology Department and Michael Armah, head of the Scientific Metrology Department.

The Ghana Standards Authority (GSA) has warned that companies that failed to comply with construction standards would face the full rigors of the law.

The Authority said it would continue to strengthen testing procedures in the construction sector and review standards to ensure they were fit for purpose.

Mr. Samuel Abdulai Jabanyite, Deputy Director-General in charge of General Services at the GSA, made this known at a stakeholder dialogue on concrete development in Accra.

It was held under the theme “Integrating Standards, Cementitious Materials, and Concrete Technology for Good Construction Practice.”

Mr. Jabanyite explained that collaboration between GSA and BAM, a German research institute, had enhanced the technical capabilities of staff and led to the development of a handbook for safe and durable construction in Ghana.

He said that the Authority was working with BAM and Koforidua Technical University to explore the use of agricultural waste such as groundnuts husks, rice husks and sugarcane waste in cement production.

Mr. Jabanyite said Ghana’s infrastructure agenda required the use of quality concrete to ensure safety and standards.

“Concrete is the backbone of modern construction. The dialogue is a collective response to addressing challenges in the sector,” he stated.

Mr. Jabanyite noted that the Authority would continue to enforce standards and equip companies with tools to protect consumers from poor structures.

Dr. Wolfram Schmidt, Senior Researcher at the BAM, emphasized the importance of collaboration in modernizing standards in the built environment to ensure compliance and innovation.

A senior lecturer at Accra Technical University, Dr. Nana Benyi Ansah, said public test laboratories were essential to quality infrastructure and credibility of standards. “We do not have to treat laboratory modernization as an administrative upgrade but as a national infrastructure priority,” he said.

Madam Sarah Acheampong, Head of Production at Regimental Concrete Products, stressed that the quality of concrete could not be compromised.

The post GSA Warns Firms on Construction Standards Compliance first appeared on Ghana Standards Authority.
