As Chinese vehicles, particularly New Energy Vehicles (NEVs), continue to enter the Ghanaian market in increasing numbers, the Ghana Standards Authority (GSA) is strengthening collaboration with Chinese Authorities to ensure that imported vehicles and automotive components meet applicable safety, quality, environmental, and performance standards.

A major milestone was achieved with the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between GSA and the China Automotive Technology and Research Center (CATARC) at the 2026 World Automobile Standards and Innovation Conference (WASIC 2026) held in Shenzhen, China, from May 27 to 29, 2026.

The partnership seeks to promote:

Harmonization of automotive standards

Recognition of conformity assessment procedures

Verification of test reports and certificates

Collaboration in testing, inspection, certification and R&D

Capacity building and technical cooperation

Investment in automotive testing infrastructure in Ghana

During the conference, Hon. Samuel Jabanyite, Deputy Director General – General Services, GSA delivered a presentation on GSA’s role in Ghana’s auto industry emphasizing the new vehicle homologation procedures and intended conformity assessment protocols for imported used vehicles.

He also shared Ghana’s perspective on sustainable automotive development in Africa, highlighting the need for stronger harmonization and regional cooperation to support industrial growth and safe, sustainable mobility.

The post GSA, China Automotive Technology & Research Center Signs MoU to Standardise Chinese Vehicles first appeared on Ghana Standards Authority.

The Ghana Standards Authority (GSA), in partnership with the German Development Cooperation (GIZ), on Monday, June 15, 2026, launched the official Organic Certification Logo to be used as part of an Organic Certification Scheme.

The launch, which was held at the AH Hotel in Accra, also brought together stakeholders in the organic produce sector to discuss issues confronting the sector and solicit ideas to improve the scheme.

Addressing participants at the launch, the Director-General (DG) of the GSA, Professor George Agyei, indicated that the initiative would support the production of safe and healthy food by encouraging farming methods that avoid synthetic fertilisers, prohibited pesticides and other harmful substances.

Prof. Agyei explained that many Ghanaian farmers currently depended on external certification programmes, which often cost thousands of dollars and limited their ability to access lucrative export markets.

He noted that support from the German Government, the Ministry of Food and Agriculture, academia and other stakeholders had enabled Ghana to establish a credible certification system that would enhance the competitiveness of local producers on the global market.

He added that the certification scheme would position Ghana as a key organic certification hub in West Africa, allowing producers from neighboring countries to access certification recognized in European, American and other international markets.

Prof. Agyei cautioned manufacturers and exporters against the illegal use of the GSA certification logo, indicating that enhanced security features, including QR code technology, had been introduced to verify authenticity.

He warned that offenders risked prosecution under the law, adding that products bearing fraudulent certification marks could be detected through international testing systems and information-sharing mechanisms.

He further disclosed that the Authority had established the necessary laboratory infrastructure and was finalizing processes for implementation of the scheme.

Also speaking at the event, the Component Head of Invest for Jobs at GIZ Ghana, Mrs. Eunice Agyeiwah Agyepong, indicated that the partnership between GIZ and the GSA began in 2022 to develop Ghana’s first nationally managed organic certification scheme supported by a strong testing and conformity assessment framework.

She noted that significant progress had been made through stakeholder engagements, development of standards and operational procedures, and capacity building for GSA personnel.

Mrs. Agyepong added that a joint learning visit by officials of GSA and Invest for Jobs to an internationally accredited certification body in India in 2025 had provided practical insights that helped shape Ghana’s framework and strengthen institutional capacity.

She expressed confidence that the scheme would make certification more accessible, enhance competitiveness, support regional trade under the African Continental Free Trade Area, and position Ghana as a credible supplier of high-quality organic products.

The event was held on the theme, “Advancing sustainable agriculture through credible organic certification.”

The GSA is establishing a national Organic Certification Scheme aimed at enabling Ghanaian farmers and agribusinesses to access premium international markets and benefit from the growing global demand for organic products.

As part of the scheme, the GSA is introducing an official Organic Certification Logo to verify products approved for safe public use.

The logo was developed by the Public Relations Department of the GSA.

The Director-General of the Ghana Standards Authority (GSA), Professor George Agyei, has urged business leaders to see standards as a route to market growth rather than a regulatory burden.

Speaking during an engagement with a delegation from the Ghana National Chamber of Commerce and Industry (GNCCI) on Tuesday, June 9, 2026, Prof. Agyei warned that non-compliance with standards is the single greatest impediment to Ghana’s export performance.

“Standards should not be seen as a bureaucratic burden. They should be seen as a competitive advantage for our businesses. Because once trust is broken, nobody will follow you again,” he said.

The GNCCI delegation was at the GSA to discuss matters of mutual interest, particularly how to strengthen the existing collaboration between the two bodies to the benefit of the Ghanaian business community.

Mr. Stephen Miezan, the President of the Chamber, said his team was also seeking a collaboration with the GSA to build the capacity of members to know and understand the basic standards on trade.

Prof. Agyei noted that strong local markets, built on quality, are the foundation for successful regional and global expansion. “A product that doesn’t meet standards is leaving a borrowed time. Sooner or later you break up the market,” he said.

The Director-General used the occasion to commend the Chamber for its proactive approach to standards advocacy among its members, describing the two institutions as natural allies with complementary mandates.

He urged the Chamber and its members to partner with the GSA adding that the leisure of the Authority is to see businesses booming across the country.

Mark Badu-Aboagye, the Chief Executive Officer of the Chamber, thanked the GSA for the fruitful engagement and its commitment to deeper collaboration on standards training, conformity assessment, and metrology.

“I see your work as very important and the Chamber is ready to support you,” he pointed out.

Also in attendance were top management members of the GSA including Dr. Awal Mohammed, Deputy Director-General in charge of Operations; Hon. Samuel Jabanyite, DDG-GEN; Mr. Francis Kojo Eshun, DDG-CAS and Ms. Barbara Wuttor-Asem, Acting Director of Administration.

The Ghana Standards Authority (GSA) on Tuesday, June 2, 2026, hosted an 18-member delegation from the Parliamentary Select Committee on Trade, Industry and Tourism at its head office in Accra.
The visit formed part of the Committee’s effort to acquaint itself with the operations of the Authority, while also engaging GSA management on critical issues and operational challenges.
The Chairman of the Committee, Hon. Alexander Roosevelt Hottordze, Member of Parliament for Central Tongu, who led the delegation, noted that GSA was the first institution the Committee had chosen to visit.
He stressed the need for collaboration among stakeholders to support the development agenda of H.E. John Dramani Mahama.
In his remarks, the Director-General of GSA, Prof. George Agyei, expressed gratitude to the Committee for the visit and the opportunity to discuss pertinent matters affecting the Authority.
He highlighted the vital role of standards in national development, stating that the success of the Government’s 24-hour economy agenda depends on the production of quality goods and services.
“We are building a 24-hour economy, and the 24-hour economy relies on standards. If the 24-hour economy is producing subs-tandard goods, then the 24-hour economy is producing liability,” he remarked.
Dr. Hudu Mogtari, the Board Chairman of GSA, in his remarks, underscored the strategic importance of the Authority’s mandate, stating that the Authority’s core functions of standardization, metrology, and conformity assessment sits at the heart of the work of the Committee.
He emphasised that closer collaboration between the Committee and the Authority would enable GSA to secure the necessary support required to effectively discharge its mandate.
Dr. Mogtari further highlighted the importance of quality infrastructure in driving economic growth, particularly as Ghana seeks to strengthen its participation in the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA).
“We are looking at an economy that is seeking to grow, and we are looking at deepening our participation in AfCFTA,” he stated.
As part of the engagement, Mr. George Anti, Head of International Relations, delivered a presentation on the Authority’s operations. He provided an overview of the history, vision, and mission of GSA, while also highlighting the core values, governance structure, and standardization in Ghana. The Committee was also briefed on the key challenges and operational issues confronting the Authority.
During the interactive session, members of the Committee raised a number of concerns, including the influx of sub-standard goods through the country’s land borders, the increasing presence of sub-standard mattresses on the market, the need for enhanced market surveillance and inspection activities, and the need to increase the staff capacity.
The Committee recommended for collaboration between the Commission for Technical and Vocational Education and Training (CTVET) and GSA to provide technical training in metrology.
Hon. Hottordze, the chairman of the committee, suggested that the Authority should consider collaborating with the military to deter non-compliant businesses from tampering with GSA enforcement seals after their facilities have been shut down for producing sub-standard products.
The visit concluded with a guided tour of the Authority’s Forensic Laboratory, Pesticide Residue Laboratory, and Metallic Contaminant Laboratory. The delegation was taken through the operations of the laboratories by Dr. Martin Adarkwa-Yiadom, Ms. Ernestina Adeenze, and Mr. John Opoku-Dankwa, respectively.

The post Parliamentary Select Committee on Trade, Industry and Tourism Pays Working Visit to GSA first appeared on Ghana Standards Authority.

The Director-General (DG) of the Ghana Standards Authority (GSA), Prof. George Agyei, together with senior officials of the Authority, on Thursday, June 4, 2026, met with members of the Steel Manufacturers Association of Ghana (SMAG) at the GSA Head Office in Accra.
The meeting was held to discuss the compliance period for the implementation of the marking requirements for steel reinforcement bars used in concrete construction, as well as to address challenges facing the steel manufacturing sector. The discussions formed part of ongoing efforts to enhance public safety, improve product quality, and ensure the traceability of steel products on the Ghanaian market.
The eight-member SMAG delegation was led by the association’s secretary, Mr. Sandeep Aroza.
In his remarks, Prof. Agyei reaffirmed the Authority’s commitment to protecting consumers while creating an enabling environment for businesses to thrive through adherence to standards.
He noted that standards play a critical role in driving economic growth by empowering producers to deliver quality products and services within a structured and competitive business environment.
“Standard compliance is not merely a regulatory obligation; it is a strategic competitive advantage. When we lose focus on standards, we risk compromising the sustainability and growth of our industries,” he stated.
Prof. Agyei expressed appreciation to the delegation for engaging with the Authority and encouraged continued collaboration between the association and the GSA to promote compliance, strengthen the steel industry, and safeguard the interests of consumers.

The post GSA Meets Steel Manufacturers to Discuss Marking Requirements for Reinforcement Steel Bars first appeared on Ghana Standards Authority.

The Ghana Standards Authority, in collaboration with the Police SWAT Team, embarked on a two-day enforcement exercise from May 18 – 19, 2026, at Afienya and Dawhenya in the Greater Accra Region, leading to the shut down of six companies engaged in the production of sub-standard mattresses.
The two-day exercise, led by the Greater Accra Regional Office, followed earlier directives issued to the companies in October 2025 to cease operations. The companies were subsequently shut down for failing to comply with established standards.
The affected companies included Jin Yuan Jia Mattress Manufacturing Plant; Monda Ghana Mattresses; ZXZ Company Limited; Rockfoam Mattress and 5A Home Company.
Investigations and product sampling conducted by the Authority revealed that the companies were using polystyrene materials in the production of mattresses. This material is unsuitable for mattress production and poses potential health risks to consumers, including back pain and discomfort resulting from prolonged use.
Speaking to the media after the exercise, Mr. Clement Kwolaga Kubati, Greater Accra Regional Manager, stated that the factories had been found to be operating illegally and manufacturing products that failed to meet the required standards.
“As far as GSA is concerned, the product used in manufacturing these mattresses is sub-standard. These factories were shut down way back in October 2025,” he stated.
Mr. Kubati further explained that intelligence gathered through the Authority’s market surveillance activities indicated that the products were still being circulated on the market despite the earlier directive.
“We have gathered enough intelligence through our market surveillance activities and identified that these products are still on the market. Instead of going after the retailers, we decided to return to the manufacturers to ensure that they are doing the right thing,” he noted.
He stressed that the Authority remains committed to strengthening enforcement and protecting consumers from unsafe products.
“The country is on a reset, and GSA is also on a reset. We are resetting, refocusing, and recalibrating,” he added.
As part of the exercise, the enforcement team locked these companies and affixed GSA stickers bearing the inscription “Under Temporary Closure by GSA” on the premises of the affected companies. Three Chinese nationals were also arrested by the Police SWAT Team and subsequently taken to the police station for further investigations.

The post GSA Intensifies Enforcement Efforts, Shuts Down Companies Producing Sub-standard Mattresses first appeared on Ghana Standards Authority.

As part of ongoing efforts to rid the market of sub-standard products, the Greater Accra Regional Office of the GSA, on Tuesday, May 19, 2026, shut down a section of the China Mall warehouse at Ashaiman for selling sub-standard mattresses. The enforcement team also cleared sub-standard electrical bulbs from the shelves of the warehouse.
The mattresses, supplied by Bright, Amorevita, and Moonda Companies, were traced to manufacturers whose facilities had earlier been shut down on the first day of the enforcement exercise for non-compliance with established standards.
The electrical bulbs had previously been sampled and tested by the Authority, with results indicating that the products failed to meet the required standards due to poor quality and incorrect labelling.
Addressing the media during the exercise, Mr. Clement Kwolaga Kubati, Greater Accra Regional Manager, stated that the warehouse had been identified as one of the distribution centers for the seized products.
“We have identified some of the mattresses seized from the manufacturing side at this facility, and per Section 44 of the GSA Act, 2022 (Act 1078), we have the power to enter any premises upon reasonable grounds if we suspect illegal activities are being carried out,” he stated.
He further disclosed that the Authority had also identified serious concerns with the electrical bulbs on sale at the warehouse.
“It is not only the mattresses; we also have issues with electrical bulbs. We sampled about 15 electrical bulbs and all of them failed the required tests,” he noted.
Explaining the test results, Mr. Kubati stated that the minimum luminous flux requirement for the sampled bulbs should have been 360 lumens. However, the 15-watt bulbs tested recorded a luminous flux of only 51 lumens, far below the approved standard.
He added that the products also failed the labelling requirements, as the information on the packaging was written in Chinese rather than the required approved language for consumers.
“They have failed both in quality evaluation and labelling requirements. Electrical products are considered high-risk goods because they can easily cause fire outbreaks,” he emphasized.
During the exercise, the enforcement team instructed workers at the mall to remove all sub-standard mattresses and electrical bulbs from the shelves and store them in the warehouse. A section of the warehouse with the sub-standard products was subsequently sealed with GSA stickers bearing the inscription “Under Temporary Closure by GSA” at the entrance.

The post GSA Enforcement Team Shuts Down Section of Ashaiman China Mall Warehouse over Sub-standard Mattresses, Electrical Bulbs first appeared on Ghana Standards Authority.
