GSA, GUTA Confer on Issues Affecting Traders, Consumers

A delegation from the Ghana Union of Traders’ Associations (GUTA), on Wednesday, March 11, 2026, met with the Ghana Standards Authority (GSA) to deliberate on issues of mutual concern affecting traders and the wider market.

Key among the issues discussed were the recent hike in GSA fees and charges as well as the influx of sub-standard vehicles onto the Ghanaian market.

The meeting was chaired by Mr. Kojo Eshun, the Deputy Director‑General of GSA in charge of Conformity Assessment (DDG-CAS), who reiterated the Authority’s commitment to upholding standards, while remaining open to stakeholder concerns.

He stated that the GSA’s mandate is centered on standards enforcement and compliance, regardless of the origin of the product or manufacturer.

On the matter of sub-standard goods, Mr. Eshun indicated that GSA has a dedicated enforcement unit responsible for monitoring and addressing such issues, adding that enforcement efforts would be intensified, calling on GUTA’s collaboration with Authority in that regard.

The Deputy Director-General in charge of General Services (DDG-GEN), Mr. Samuel Abdulai Jabanyite, expressed appreciation to GUTA for the important role it plays in the country’s commercial and economic activities.

He reiterated that consumer protection is a core mandate of the GSA, explaining that the Authority has introduced Trading Standards Inspectors (TSIs), who have been trained to identify and remove sub-standard goods from the market.

Mr. MacMillan Prentice, Head of the Vehicle Homologation Unit, stated that GSA has been focusing significantly on the emerging vehicle homologation sector, which ensures that vehicles meet required technical and safety standards.

He indicated that the Authority intends to expand its focus to include used vehicles adding that plans are far afoot to publish homologated vehicles on the GSA website to provide consumers with reliable information.

Mr. Eshun assured the GUTA delegation that all concerns raised during the meeting had been duly noted.

Present at the meeting included Ms. Joyce Okoree, the Director of Administration (DAD), Mrs. Dorothy Amoah, Head of Marketing and members of the Public Relations team.
