A delegation from the National Road Safety Authority (NRSA), together with representatives from the FIA Foundation, an international charitable organisation and Transaid, on Thursday, July 10, 2026, paid a courtesy call on the Director-General (DG) of the Ghana Standards Authority (GSA), Prof. George Agyei, and some senior management of the Authority at the head office in Accra.
The delegation, led by the Director-General of the NRSA, Mr. Abraham Amaliba, Esq., visited the Authority to introduce and familiarise the FIA Foundation to the leadership of GSA and to engage them ahead of the 2026 Safer African Helmet Initiative (SAHI) Summit, which is scheduled to be hosted in Ghana.
The meeting also formed part of a broader stakeholder engagement aimed at promoting collaboration and securing support for the Summit, a flagship road safety event focused on promoting motorcycle safety and strengthening helmet standards across Africa.
Prof. Agyei in his remarks underscored the importance of the initiative, noting that it aligns with ongoing national efforts to improve road safety and reduce road traffic fatalities.
He stated that increasing urbanisation, traffic congestion and the absence of extensive mass transit systems in major cities have contributed to the growing use of motorcycles as a convenient mode of transportation. He stressed that ensuring the safety of riders and passengers through the use of quality helmets is critical.
Prof. Agyei expressed GSA’s commitment to supporting the initiative through its regulatory and technical mandate, emphasising the Authority’s role in developing and enforcing standards that protect consumers and promote public safety.
He added that, GSA will continue to strengthen its testing capabilities and work towards supporting the growth of a compliant helmet manufacturing sector in Ghana to facilitate the effective implementation of helmet standards.
Prof. Agyei reaffirmed the Authority’s support for the Safer African Helmet Initiative and expressed optimism that collaborative efforts among stakeholders would contribute to safer and more disciplined road use across the country.

Adelaide T. Aikins; Mr. Fotwe Afful and other members of the Public Relations Team and Mr. Kingsley Domena of the Homologation Unit.
