As part of ongoing efforts to rid the market of sub-standard products, the Greater Accra Regional Office of the GSA, on Tuesday, May 19, 2026, shut down a section of the China Mall warehouse at Ashaiman for selling sub-standard mattresses. The enforcement team also cleared sub-standard electrical bulbs from the shelves of the warehouse.
The mattresses, supplied by Bright, Amorevita, and Moonda Companies, were traced to manufacturers whose facilities had earlier been shut down on the first day of the enforcement exercise for non-compliance with established standards.
The electrical bulbs had previously been sampled and tested by the Authority, with results indicating that the products failed to meet the required standards due to poor quality and incorrect labelling.
Addressing the media during the exercise, Mr. Clement Kwolaga Kubati, Greater Accra Regional Manager, stated that the warehouse had been identified as one of the distribution centers for the seized products.
“We have identified some of the mattresses seized from the manufacturing side at this facility, and per Section 44 of the GSA Act, 2022 (Act 1078), we have the power to enter any premises upon reasonable grounds if we suspect illegal activities are being carried out,” he stated.
He further disclosed that the Authority had also identified serious concerns with the electrical bulbs on sale at the warehouse.
“It is not only the mattresses; we also have issues with electrical bulbs. We sampled about 15 electrical bulbs and all of them failed the required tests,” he noted.
Explaining the test results, Mr. Kubati stated that the minimum luminous flux requirement for the sampled bulbs should have been 360 lumens. However, the 15-watt bulbs tested recorded a luminous flux of only 51 lumens, far below the approved standard.
He added that the products also failed the labelling requirements, as the information on the packaging was written in Chinese rather than the required approved language for consumers.
“They have failed both in quality evaluation and labelling requirements. Electrical products are considered high-risk goods because they can easily cause fire outbreaks,” he emphasized.
During the exercise, the enforcement team instructed workers at the mall to remove all sub-standard mattresses and electrical bulbs from the shelves and store them in the warehouse. A section of the warehouse with the sub-standard products was subsequently sealed with GSA stickers bearing the inscription “Under Temporary Closure by GSA” at the entrance.
